Enjoy a summer day tour to glorious South Wales as our train is diesel hauled from Exeter to Bristol and then following a locomotive change we are steam hauled through the Severn Tunnel and into Wales, travelling through Cardiff and via Bridgend and Port Talbot we take the Swansea District Line to run beside the Bristol Channel and around the coast offering splendid views across Carmarthen Bay to the beautiful Pembrokeshire countryside with miles of sand dunes and vast golden beaches. We arrive into Carmarthen for an afternoon break whilst our steam locomotive is turned, watered and coaled for the return journey.

Carmarthen is an attractive town set on the banks of the River Towy, with a pedestrianised shopping area and a large modern covered market. From the old Quay, narrow winding lanes lead up between old houses to the gatehouse of a ruined 14th-c Norman castle. One of the oldest buildings in the town is 12th-c St Peter’s Church. The many splendid houses beside the church and the elegant buildings around the Guildhall Square, testify to the town’s distinguished past. The River Towy (Welsh: Afon Tywi), the second largest in Wales, flows on down to the south coast, leading out into the Bay of Carmarthen, which is lined with many fine beaches. These include the wide stretch of Pendine Sands, where in the 1920s it was the scene of several thrilling attempts at the land speed record.

With our locomotive refreshed we head homeward through Llanelli with views of the Gower and at Swansea take the line through Cockett and the Vale of Glamorgan line.

The train is steam hauled from Bristol by one of our immaculately restored pool of engines including: the world famous LMS Royal Scot Class, No.46100 ‘Royal Scot’ – West Country Class, No. 34046 ‘Braunton’ – Britannia Pacific Class, No 70000 ‘Britannia’ – LNER A4 Pacific No 60007 ‘Sir Nigel Gresley’
