‘The Elizabethan’ was the premier train on the East Coast Main Line in the post-war period named to honour the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II and ran from 1953. We are proud to present this recreation of a very historic train with a matching rake of beautifully restored carmine and cream carriages for an incredibly unique journey between London and Edinburgh, offering a two-night break in Scotland’s historic capital.
Our train is diesel hauled to York by Deltic 55022 ‘Royal Scots Grey’ and following a change of locomotive we continue steam hauled to the beautiful Scottish Capital with a fast run through Darlington and at Newcastle the crossing of the River Tyne bridges. Then continuing along the Northumberland coast with stunning views across to Lindisfarne and at Berwick on Tweed we pass over the Royal Border Bridge and enter Scotland to continue through the lowlands to Edinburgh with an arrival around 19.00. Following a two night break our train returns from Edinburgh at 09.00 and we return along the East Coast Main Line, initially steam hauled to York where Deltic 55022 ‘Royal Scots Grey’ again takes over for the remainder of the journey to London.
There is something for everyone in the truly enchanting city of Edinburgh with numerous attractions all within easy walking distance – perhaps visit the mediaeval Old Town and take a stroll down the Royal Mile to the Queens Scottish residence, the Palace of Holyroodhouse, or visit the impressive fortress of Edinburgh Castle set high on a rocky crag, home of the Scottish Crown Jewels and Stone of Destiny. For the more adventurous take a short tram ride to the former Royal Yacht Britannia, or jump on an open top bus, departing every few minutes from Waverley Bridge offering a tour of all the major historic sites and attractions.
If a day in Edinburgh does not appeal, then perhaps consider joining ‘The Aberdonian’ steam hauled train for a fabulous journey to Aberdeen including the crossing of the iconic Forth Bridge and travel through wonderful Scottish scenery.
Our train is due to be diesel hauled from London by 55022 ‘Royal Scots Grey’ (subject to availability) and steam hauled from York to Edinburgh and return by one of our immaculately restored pool of engines including: the world famous LMS Royal Scot Class 46100 ‘Royal Scot’ or LNER A4 Pacific 60007 ‘Sir Nigel Gresley’ or LMS 46233 ‘Duchess of Sutherland’
