We are pleased to present an early summer train to the pretty seaside resort of Weymouth hauled by one of our magnificent steam locomotives on a most beautiful and picturesque journey through the dramatic Avon Valley with its honey coloured buildings and on to Westbury where the white horse is visible on the distant downs. We join the ‘Berks & Hants’ main line for a spirited run to Castle Cary where our train diverges onto the single line through Thomas Hardy’s beloved countryside that featured as the background to his Wessex novels.
From Yeovil Pen Mill we are diesel hauled for the short journey to the Dorset seaside town of Weymouth where around three hours will be available to discover the many charms of this ancient seaside town, regarded by many as one of the UK’s most beautiful seaside resorts, it was a favourite haunt of King George III with picturesque alleys and excellent sands, its preserved buildings and Georgian seafront stand testament to its historic past and a modern town centre is complemented by quaint side streets, all of which are connected by over three miles of level promenade. The picturesque harbour boasts fishing boats, yachts and catamarans.
Our return will be in the late afternoon as the train is steam hauled all the way back to Bristol, including the testing climb of Upwey bank that should make the sound of our engine working hard reverberate from the surrounding hills.
The train will be hauled by one of our immaculately restored pool of engines including: the world famous LMS Royal Scot Class, No.46100 ‘Royal Scot’ – West Country Class, No. 34046 ‘Braunton’ – Britannia Pacific Class, No 70000 ‘Britannia’
