Departing from London Paddington our steam hauled train travels west for a full day tour to the beautiful Cotswolds and a visit to historic Worcester. We travel outward through Oxford and Evesham, with a return through the Golden Valley and the challenging climb of Sapperton bank.
Following departure from Reading we take the Great Western main line to Didcot and travel through Oxford, the city of dreaming spires and join the Cotswold line travelling through an area of outstanding Natural Beauty characterised by attractive small towns and villages built of Cotswold stone. Rare limestone grassland habitats as well as the old growth beech woodlands typify the area, which is a delight to behold. We face the five-mile climb of Honeybourne bank, graded at 1 in 100 then onward through Evesham to Worcester for a break of around three hours.
The city of Worcester stands on the River Severn and is best known for its magnificent ornate cathedral but also famous for the world-renowned porcelain, the home of composer Edward Elgar and the piquant Worcestershire sauce. Perhaps visit the historic Guildhall and Tudor House Museum or take a stroll beside the beautiful river.
Our train departs for the return in the late afternoon and we take the GWR main line through Cheltenham Spa before taking the Golden Valley line through picturesque Stroud and beside the River Frome. Next is the long twisting climb to Sapperton tunnel as our engine works hard up the severe gradient. We then descend through Kemble to Swindon and travel through the Vale of the white horse to Didcot and onward to Paddington.
The train is steam hauled throughout by one of our immaculately restored pool of engines including: the world famous LMS Royal Scot Class, No.46100 ‘Royal Scot’ – West Country Class, No. 34046 ‘Braunton’ – Britannia Pacific Class, No 70000 ‘Britannia’ – LNER A4 Pacific, No 60007 ‘Sir Nigel Gresley’
